Twelfth place
Canada's up to nine medals, two gold, three silver, four bronze. We've squeezed in front of Kenya and Ethiopia. Woo-hoo!

I spent most of the weekend working on an essay about Red Dragon (the novel). I'm limited to 900 words, which means I have to be picky about what I say. I was up to 1100 words at one point, but I decided to sacrifice some things that I deemed less important and now I'm right in the target area. The first half of the essay has come together well. I've moved things around a lot to try to come up with a good flow to my thesis. The last half needs work and I'm still looking for a good way to wrap it up, but it's getting there.

Watched Big Brother last night. I thought Renny made good choices for her nominees. I can't believe how easily those people ate crickets. Ewwww. And pig's ears. Yuck! I thought someone would choke, but they all managed to get down what they volunteered to eat. Jerry seemed to have the hardest time.

Chris Noth had his final appearance on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. I expected something more dramatic to happen at the end, but they left him in an interesting existential position. I also caught up on Burn Notice from last week. This new Victor fellow is a pain. I wonder how Michael is ever going to get himself out from under his current state of duress.

I'm a big fan of Michael Shanks, though, and I think he's great as the new character on Burn Notice, however temporary. He makes a great bad guy.

I'm not really familiar with the actor, but I agree that he's a great bad guy. I can't wait for the time when Michael eventually takes him apart like he did with his last "handler."

Shanks played Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1 (the good one, not the spinoff), and did an excellent job of developing the character. I thought maybe he was going to be typecast as a geek with muscle, so that's probably why he's doing the bad guy thing. :)

Michael does have a way of taking care of business, doesn't he? And he has some quotable lines -- something we haven't gotten in TV shows lately: "Are you gonna kill everybody I talk to?"

The show has a great sense of humor, without being campy. (In Plain Sight tries too hard to have a sense of humor, for example, and it undermines the show completely, in my opinion.)

I like it, too, that the scams don't always come off as planned (like when Victor showed up in the nightclub and put the kibosh on the sting last week) and they have to scramble for Plan B.

It's a very smooth show. One of my favorites.
